Guests may register here for $20\nDr. Eric Fung is a distinguished Chinese-American pianist renowned for his “vibrant vitality\, unflappable logic\, flexibility in nuances\, and requisite lyricism\,” as lauded by the New York Concert Review. In 2002\, he was awarded the prestigious title of “Bach Prize Winner” at the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig\, Germany\, in recognition of his profound interpretation of the composer’s works. His doctoral dissertation\, Johann Sebastian Bach’s Overture in the French Manner\, BWV 831: A Study in Motive\, Harmony\, and Rhythm\, further exemplifies his dedication to deriving musical interpretation through rigorous research and analysis. \nBorn in Hong Kong\, Dr. Fung began his formal music training at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts under the tutelage of Eva Lue. He earned the Piano Performance Diploma from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (UK) before pursuing further studies in the United States. He holds degrees in piano performance from the Eastman School of Music (BM\, Performer’s Certificate\, and MM) and the Juilliard School (DMA)\, two of the world’s leading conservatories. His principal teachers include Natalya Antonova\, Martin Canin (student of Rosina Lhévinne)\, and Oxana Yablonskaya (student of Tatiana Nikolayeva)\, linking him to the Russian piano tradition. He has also received coaching from esteemed pedagogues such as Boris Berman\, Christopher Elton\, Claude Frank\, Peter Frankl\, and Robert Levin in masterclasses. \nDuring his formative years\, Dr. Fung developed a deep interest in music theory and analysis. At Eastman\, he studied under Matthew Brown and Steven Laitz\, earning a master’s degree in music theory pedagogy. His research at Juilliard was supervised by Carl Schachter\, a preeminent authority of Schenkerian analysis. \nAs a performer\, Dr. Fung has received accolades from eminent music critics. Following his performance of Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Juilliard Orchestra at Lincoln Center under Maestro Otto Werner Mueller\, Anthony Tommasini of the New York Times praised his playing as “refined and elegant.” Harris Goldsmith of the New York Concert Review\, after his Carnegie Hall performance\, described him as “a pianist with a musical persona akin to Rudolf Serkin.”  The Hong Kong Economic Review noted his unique aesthetic\, tracing it back to his study and passion for Bach’s works. \nDr. Fung has collaborated with numerous orchestras around the world\, including the Juilliard Orchestra\, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra\, Middle Germany Chamber Orchestra\, Manhattan Chamber Orchestra\, Hershey Symphony Orchestra\, Lebanon Valley College Orchestra\, Central Pennsylvania Symphony Orchestra\, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Orchestra. He has also been a featured artist at international music festivals such as the Israel Festival in Jerusalem\, European Piano Forum in Berlin\, Puigcerda Music Festival in Spain\, Philadelphia Bach Festival\, Kamerman Piano Series in Pensacola\, Lancaster International Piano Festival\, and the Hong Kong Arts Festival. \nIn 2022\, Dr. Fung broadened his performance horizon by joining the cast of Nadia\, a play with chamber music about the legendary French music pedagogue Nadia Boulanger\, written by Mina Fisher. He has since become a regular cast member\, collaborating with mezzo-sopranos Maria Jette and Adriana Zabala\, and violinists Stephanie Arado and Stéphanie Moraly in performances on stages in US and France. \nDr. Fung is currently the Carmean Endowed Professor of Music (Piano Performance) at Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania. As an educator\, he has conducted masterclasses and lectures at numerous institutions and professional organizations\, including the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance in Israel\, Sichuan Conservatory of Music in China\, Xinghai Conservatory of Music in China\, National Tainan University in Taiwan\, National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan\, Soochow University in Taiwan\, East Tennessee State University\, Hope College in Michigan\, University of Illinois at Carbondale\, Hong Kong Baptist University\, the Chinese University of Hong Kong\, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts\, the Tom Lee Music Foundation\, and numerous music teacher associations. He frequently adjudicates competitions\, including the Lancaster Symphony Concerto Competition\, Greater Princeton Steinway Society Scholarship Competition\, New Jersey Music Teachers Association Piano Competition\, and MTNA Competition. As he explores these legendary musicians and what makes their performances so extraordinary\, Mark will help you open your ears and expand your perspectives so you can perceive music in new ways and reconsider the nature of interpretation. \nMark Ainley is an internationally-known historical piano recordings expert who for forty years has explored the lives and artistry of pianists whose playing has been preserved since the dawn of recording technology. DESCRIPTION:This is a recital open to NEPTA members for grades K-6 providing an opportunity to perform in a friendly setting. Costumes and Halloween music are welcome and encouraged! The time limit for each student is 2 minutes. Memory is optional. Multiple recitals will be hosted beginning at 3:00 pm. Teachers may not request a specific recital time\, but can request earlier or later in the afternoon. \nINSTRUCTIONS \nThe recital fee is $32 per student. Teachers may enroll up to 15 students. DESCRIPTION:Baroque Dance – Why Should We Care About It?  (If It Ain’t Baroque\, Don’t Fix It!) \n\nThis event is free for non-members and guests.  Guest can register here to attend in person or to receive a livestream link. \n\n\nThis workshop is interactive. I will be teaching simplified versions of the dance steps for Baroque Dances. Comfortable shoes and clothes are highly recommended. We encounter these dances in dance suites and individual pieces composed by Bach\, Handel\, Rameau\, Couperin and even earlier pieces by the English clavecinists. I will present the history and origin of the dances and the standardized components of the Baroque Dance Suite\, the importance of Louis XIV and court protocols\, the central place that dance held in the lives of the nobility of Europe\, and the lingering effects that these dances had on the development of the classical Sonata. \nThe performance of the steps is crucial to understanding the proper performance tempos of these dances\, their qualities\, their phrase structures\, and their internal accents and stresses. I will also explore the many pieces of the late 18th and 19th centuries which incorporated these dances and expanded their expressive range\, usually without referencing the dances by name. If technology cooperates\, I will also show some curated videos of the dances being performed in costume which have been reconstructed from the 17th century historical dance notation called.Beauchamp-Feuillet Notation. I hope that by the end of the workshop\, you’ll be able to answer the question in the title. \nMr. Presley\, a graduate of Yale University and the Juilliard School\, was a winner of the William Petschek scholarship as well as the competitive piano minor teaching fellowship at Juilliard. As a competition prize winner\, he has appeared as soloist with the Spokane Symphony\, the Washington-Idaho Symphony\, and the Yale Symphony. He has also performed many concertos with the Spokane Opera Orchestra. \nHe made a career of working with modern dancers after graduation\, first with the Martha Graham Company in New York\, and then on the dance faculty of Florida State University. He has premiered a number of composers’ works written especially for dance\, revived a great deal of 20th century music used for modern dance and was invited to showcase the piano works of Robert Muczynski at the Music Teacher National Convention in Miami in 1990. \nAs a composer himself\, he has written many works for dance and solo piano. Since his return to Spokane\, he has been active as a soloist and accompanist including work for several productions of the Spokane Opera. \nHe served as a member of the piano faculty in the Music department of Eastern Washington University in the spring of 2001 and has been a member of the piano faculty at Gonzaga University since the Fall of 2001. His students have been prize winners in state and local competitions and a number have gone on to have careers in music. \nHe performs regularly as the principal keyboard player for the Spokane Symphony\, as a chamber musician and as part of two-piano duos. He played Beethoven’s own arrangement of the Grosse Fuga for 4 hands with Christopher O’Reilly in 2010\, and accompanied Thomas Hampson for the 10th Anniversary Gala of the Fox Theater in Spokane. He accompanied Zuill Bailey in Michael Daugherty’s Grammy Award winning new piece\, Tales of Hemingway\, in December\, 2017 and subsequent to that\, has accompanied Zuill in many concerts in Spokane as part of the Connoisseur Concerts series. \nHe has presented at MTNA National Conferences in Spokane and Minneapolis\, as well as numerous state conferences in the Northwest.
